A Brief History of Fremantle Markets

The Markets were designed by architect Talbot Hobson and opened in 1902 (though the foundation stone was laid in 1897). Built in the Victorian Federation style, the building was designed to be a permanent home for market traders who had been selling from carts and stalls.

For over 125 years, the Markets have survived wars, depressions, and changes in retail culture to remain one of WA's most beloved destinations. The Heritage Hall, with its beautiful brick arches and high ceilings, is listed on the Register of the National Estate.

The Markets Today

Today, Fremantle Markets is home to over 150 stalls, including:

• Street food from around the world
• Handmade crafts and artisan products
